The figures: what HVAC postings state

Only 48.1% of HVAC postings state pay
1,972 of the 4,100 collected postings carried a usable annual figure. 2,127 gave no pay information at all, and one fell outside the collection window. So every number on this page describes slightly under half of the advertised market, and it is the half that talks.
Which half that is can be measured rather than guessed at. In the thirteen states with pay-transparency laws in force, 53.9 percent of postings state pay, against 33.8 percent everywhere else, and the median role pays about 10 percent more in those states. That pushes any median built from disclosing postings upward. Re-weighting by state removes most of it, and for HVAC technicians the correction is 1.2 percent, from $75,920 to $75,000.

Those two counts differ by a lot, and that is a fact about collection rather than about hiring. Posting volume on this pipeline swings by a factor of twenty between months, so this page makes no claim about how many HVAC jobs exist or whether that number is growing. The medians are comparable. The counts are not. A 9.0 percent rise in posted base pay is what puts the role in the hot band on PayScope's market label.

Entry's 25th percentile of $38,500 sits $18,326 below its own median on 50 postings. That is wide enough to read as a handful of low advertisements rather than a floor for the level. The two stated experience ranges overlap as well, 3 to 10 years at mid and 4 to 10 at senior, which is the subject of the next section.
Why senior sits above lead
Senior HVAC postings state a median of $90,000 and lead postings $80,000. In the trades a lead posting is usually a shift or crew lead on an hourly rate, with scheduling and a small crew attached, while the senior rung is a licensed or specialist technician doing the harder diagnostic and commercial work. So the four rows above are a ladder of titles, and the overlapping experience ranges say the same thing. Anyone reading lead as the top of this role's pay range is reading it wrong.

Every figure on this page is base pay as the employer wrote it, with bonus, commission, overtime, on-call and per-call pay and equity all excluded.
